Food allergies in children? Rashes?

My daughter is 21 months old and is covered in a rash from head to toe. Her doctor says roseola, but she never had the fevers that are supposed to proceed the rash.

Her rash is really itchy and driving her crazy. Benedryl helps a bit, but she is so miserable on benedryl and sleepy and wobbly. She takes off her clothes because they hurt to wear…

Does this sound like a food allergy? Can food allergies develop this late? We are a boring family and eat the same meals over and over, same snacks, same drinks, etc.

It could be a food allergy, but it could be an allergy to a number of things.

You can try changing a few things to see if it helps…change your laundry detergent to something absolutely perfume and dye free that’s made to be hypoallergenic for babies. (if you want something natural there are these things you can get called soap nuts…it’s a natural soap that’s grown on a tree and they’re very intriguing and many people with allergies use them…you can google them and I know they are available for purchase at Amazon.com). Change her soap to something that’s as simple and pure as you can get and change any lotions that you are using as well (for lotions there’s a cream I use called Vanicream…my allergist recommended it to me and they sell it at Walgreens…it’s about as simple as you can get with a lotion…I’d say to try Aveeno soap to bathe her with as it is non-drying). You may want to try one of the Aveeno anti-itch oatmeal baths for her as well while she is having problems with the itchiness.

Make sure that she’s wearing clothes that can breathe to give the rash air…if you can give her a chance to wear nothing then that’s fine too. Make sure her nails are short so that she can’t scratch it.

She’s too young to go to an allergist to be tested for allergies, but for the time being try to make the stuff you use on her as plain and chemical-free as possible and see if that helps alleviate any issues.

    Hope that helps.
